Description
A picture book detailing the history of the Jenkins Orphanage Band of Charleston, which began in 1891 when Reverend Daniel Joseph Jenkins, a former slave, gathered old and unwanted musical instruments for the kids in his orphanage. From there the Charleston "rag" style of music became a sensation, and the orphan musicians began performing all over America and even in places in Europe.
